Police using force against students a shame for democracy

Swaraj Abhiyan is alarmed and sad to note that Governments of several states like Maharashtra and West Bengal are repeatedly using brutal police force to suppress peaceful protests by students. Recent events at the campuses of FTII, Pune and Presidency University, Kolkata are shameful, to say the least. Governments appear to be disoriented about the needs and aspirations of the youth and there is increasing confrontation and disruption at educational institutions. Swaraj Abhiyan feels that this does not auger well for the nation and there is need for introspection and course correction so that the sacred bond between teachers and students is not sullied by high handedness of Governments.

Swaraj Abhiyan calls upon students to continue to remain non-violent in their democratic fight for legitimate rights and also calls upon teachers to engage with the students and be proactive in resolving issues, without involving police and outside forces.
