Press Note, Swaraj Abhiyan, 06-Jul-2015
The mysterious death of a TV reporter investigating the Vyapam scam and that of the dean of Jabalpur Medical College, whose dead body was found in a Delhi hotel is yet another disturbing news related to probably one of the biggest recruitment scam. Another news from the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh of the death of a trainee cop recruited through Vyapam has come today. Swaraj Abhiyan expresses its worry at the rising death toll with each passing day. 45 people, who have either been witness, accused, or associated with investigation have lost their lives in unnatural circumstances. Unfortunately, rather than showing the intent to stop this spate of deaths, senior ministers from the ruling MP government have been passing insensitive comments, rubbing salt onto the wounds of grieving families.
Swaraj Abhiyan is shocked to see that the central government has not interfered and has shown no intent to unearth the scam or investigate the mysterious deaths. The STF investigating the scam is under the Shivraj Singh Chauhan government while the chief minister himself is allegedly involved. This beats the natural law of justice and raises serious questions on whether the truth will ever be uncovered. Not only the chief minister but involvement of many high profile politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen have been alleged. Ex CM Uma Bharti, Governor Ram Naresh Yadav, Education Minister Laxmi Kant Yadav and dozens of IAS and IPS officers are allegedly involved.
The STF, which has presented a 92176 page charge sheet has found 3292 various types of crimes under just one umbrella of Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) scam, also known as the MP Vyavasayik Pareeksha Mandal, Vyapam Scam. The magnitude of the scam can be gauged with the fact that more than 54 types of examinations are under scanner, where more than 80 lakh aspirants for government jobs or admission in medical colleges are directly affected.
Swaraj Abhiyan condemns the ruling party’s indifference, at both centre and state, towards a scam which is taking lives by the day and considers the present investigation insufficient and toothless.
Given the alleged involvement of CM and various ministers, it is highly unlikely that an independent enquiry would be carried out by any agency reporting to the state government. Even a CBI investigation is amenable, given that the same party rules the centre. Also the past track record of central governments manipulating the CBI is not unknown to us. Swaraj Abhiyan demands independent enquiry by an SIT formed and supervised by the Supreme Court so that the truth comes to the fore and the mystery of unnatural deaths can be uncovered. The Prime Minister, who is getting into an unwelcome habit of keeping mum on issues where his party is in question, needs to break his silence on the Vyapam scam.
Swaraj Abhiyan co-founder Prashant Bhushan has agreed to appear in the Supreme Court for one of the whistleblowers seeking an independent investigation of the scam.
