Swaraj Abhiyan Press Note, 02-May-15
Swaraj Samwad series continues in North Bengal
Swaraj Abhiyan organised a swaraj samwad at Islampur in district North Dinajpur of West Bengal. hundreds of adivasis and farmers attended the samwad held outside the Bus Station at Islampur. The Samwad marked the conclusion of a month long struggle by adivasis of Debjora tea estate area. The West Bengal government had surreptitiously leased 1122 acres of land (including 500 acre of adivasi land) to industrialists based in Siliguri on 9 March. This land included the land of 6 villages, schools and ICD centres. As soon as the adivasis learnt about it, a dharna began oitside the Block Land Record Office, Chopra on 30 March. They demanded cancellation of the lease, but have had no response from the state government so far.
Addressing the Samwad, Professor Yogendra Yadav said the struggle of adivasis in Debjora symbolized the larger struggle for swaraj. Jal, jungle and Jameen belong to the people and cannot be used for any purpose except peoples’ welfare. He linked their struggle to the ongoing protest against the Land Acquisition Ordinance of the Central government. He said this ordinance has taken away the few concessions the adviasis and farmers had obtained after 120 years of operation of the colonial land acquisition act. The present government is determined to virtually annul that Act of 2013 which reflected cross party consensus of that time. It is shocking that the government wants to push through this law repeatedly through the back door, despite not getting it through the parliament. He declared that Swaraj Abhiyan will take up the cause of adivasis of Debojara at a higher plane, both politically and legally. He requested them to call off their dharna so as to take the struggle to a higher plane. Following this the dharna was lifted.
The Samwad was organised by Shri Pasarul Alam, candidate of Aam Aadami Party in the Raigunj constituency in the Lok Sabha election. The participants included Dr Chittaranjan Sinha, Prof Krishnakanta Rai, Sh Bibekanda Burman, Ms Madhushri Mukherjee, Ms. Baha Tudu, Shri Dinesh Sigh, Sh Rajesh Munda and Sh Mikku Oraon.
