The media is showing with great vigor confession of Narender Modi on freedom of faith that has been the worst hit during his nine month BJP Govt led by him as PM. Fighting back the perception that the Union government is inactive in the face of acts of religious intolerance by Hindutva groups, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Tuesday that every individual had an “undeniable right to retain or adopt” any faith. The question that crops up is does he really mean what he says. Will he be ever empowered to take a line which RSS, VHP and his own MPs in BJP differ on.
“We cannot accept violence against any religion on any pretext, and I strongly condemn such violence. My government will act strongly in this regard,” he said. One would like the PM to act first in this regard with evidences of violation recorded in parliament in presence of PM and in public on media and in writing and in action in the name of Ghar Wapsi and repeated threats from VHP leader Parveen Togadia who is having warrants pending in Maharashtra and else where on allegations of religious intolerance. of
It was Mr. Modi’s unequivocal and first statement against campaigns that have been disturbing the communal peace in the country. His silence on such actions, some of them by groups associated with the Sangh Parivar, had attracted global criticism, denting his image and that of the government. In the past two months, five churches and one Christian-run school have come under attack in the capital alone.
The visit of President Obama saw a clear message on India will splinter if it fails to take along the values and principles and article of constitution it has all these decades respected and has been a inclusive and religious tolerant nation. The message does not stop obviously at this. The US administration has taken note of havoc created by the Sangh Parivwar and indifferent attitude of Modi the PM and the Govt of BJP in India.
The US is cuatious and proactive it is smarter than many it expected the PM in his historic victory to live up to the promises it made Sub Ka Saath Sub Ka Vikas. With PM Modi track record and his ban on visiting US on account of genocide in Gujarat US gave pause expecting things to Change and the man to mature.
But on the contrary spill of venom on Religious Minorities grew under MOdi altering the US and the World on its intentions. Thus effecting the business and the prospects of all friendly treates and agreements to take the two nations ahead as partners in growth of their people.
The Prime Minister’s statement won commendation from the audience at the function organised by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church to celebrate the elevation to sainthood of Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Mother Euphrasia. The Cristians are very un happy with Modi Government. I am sure the Minorities will be guarded and will want the PM to walk the talk and take action.
“My government will ensure that there is complete freedom of faith and that everyone has the undeniable right to retain or adopt the religion of his or her choice without coercion or undue influence. My government will not allow any religious group to incite hatred against others, overtly or covertly. Mine will be a government that gives equal respect to all religions,” he said. But is he not aware the RSS and the VHP and Saffron brigade is on the opinion let the Modi Govt be given some time to get going with its developmental activity and in couple of years they will come back with the same agenda and will wish to peruse the agenda of Hindu Rastra and Ghar Wapsi and all sorts of moves and pressurize the govt in majority.
Mr. Modi said equal respect of all faiths was an integral part of the Constitution, but it had “roots in the ancient cultural traditions” of India. “This principle of equal respect and treatment for all faiths has been a part of India’s ethos for thousands of years. And that is how it became integral to the Constitution,” he said. This is what Obama said and I am happy he is taking passages form the speech of Obama and reading them out after the US President reminded him of the articles in the Constitution. Sure the US has put heat on him to perform.
The Church is still apprehensive. Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church, said: “The government’s alleged plans to bring in new laws [regarding conversion] will create animosity and destroy peace and harmony in the country.”
Catholic body urges PM to implement assurances
Welcoming the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi against campaigns that disturbed the communal peace, Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, president, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, urged him on Tuesday to ensure that the assurances given to the Christian community were implemented.
“He spoke well. Only a good Hindu can say this,” said Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader M.G. Vaidya.
Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal George Alencherry said Christians were peace-loving people, but “this should not, however, be used to trample us.” The Cardinal appealed to the Prime Minister to look into the issue of Dalit Christian rights.
In January, U.S. President Barack Obama’s invocation of the Indian Constitution in the context of religious freedom had created a flutter.
This passage coming form PM Modi is music to ears Modi Invoked Swami Vivekananda who said “We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true,” the Prime Minister said: “What Swami Vivekananda had said a century ago holds good and will, for ever, not only for this nation but also for this government or for that matter any government in India, run by any political party.”
Miles in thousands before the Modi Govt walks the talk he makes. I hope he will do though the intentions of him and his BJP and RSS do not seem to indicate. But the pressure on business and growth will be related to how the BJP govt performs.
