Expressing pride and exuberance after casting their ballot, voters — young and not so young — have taken to the social media across India, flaunting their inked finger as proof of exercise of their democratic right and are urging others to vote.

08:59 AMMaharashtra: Voting for 10 Lok Sabha seats got underway here today. A total of 201 candidates, including 90 independents, are in the fray and they are vying for the attention of around 1.22 crore voters spread in the Vidarbha region.

08:40 AMOdisha: Polling began today for 10 Lok Sabha and 70 assembly seats in Odisha. Over 13 million electors will cast their ballot in the first phase of polling. There are a total of 2,88,80,850 voters in the state.

08:40 AMKerala: Polling began in all the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala today. Voting will take place in 21,424 polling stations and over 2.42 crore voters are expected to to exercise their franchise. The principal contestants in the fray include K V Thomas (Ernakulam) and Shashi Tharoor (Thiruvananthapuram) all of them from the UDF.

08:24 AMJharkhand: Amid tight security, polling began at 7am in Jharkhand’s four Lok Sabha constituencies that are Maoist affected. Voting began in Koderma, Lohardaga, Palamu and Chatra constituencies.

Six contestants are in the fray for the lone seat with a close fight between sitting Congress MP, Hamdullah Sayeed, son of former Union minister, late PM Sayeed and P P Mohammed Faisal of NCP. An electorate of 49,821, including 25,342 men will cast their votes.

07:47 AMUttar Pradesh: Voting begins for 10 Lok Sabha seats in western Uttar Pradesh, which are Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Kairana, Bijnor, Meerut, Bagpat, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bulandshahr and Aligarh. The fate of 146 candidates will be decided by over 17 million voters.

07:43 AMJammu: Voting has begun in Jammu, the only Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir which has both the international border and the Line of Control. Around 1.7 million voters will elect their Lok Sabha member from 2,271 polling stations in the four districts of Jammu, Samba, Poonch and Rajouri.

07:37 AMThe 2014 election battle will truly begin on a large scale today as a large chunk of the country, accounting for 91 seats, goes to the polls. It includes all seats in Delhi, Haryana and Kerala and several in UP, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra.
